Veterans Park officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019. This park honors UNC Charlotte community members past and present who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Christine Reed Davis, associate vice chancellor and dean of students, spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony stating that "the presence of this park on our campus is a physical symbol to both our institutional history and continued commitment to serve our student veterans. I hope this park will be a regular reminder to our entire community of the dedicated service performed by fellow 49ers to protect our freedoms."
As stated on the plaque at Veterans Park, "UNC Charlotte was founded on September 23, 1946, after World War II, in response to the rising educational demands generated by returning veterans in the Charlotte area. UNC Charlotte was made possible by the hard work and dedication to these veterans by Miss Bonnie Cone."
Christopher Orr '18 conceived Veterans Park and worked with the Dean of Students Office and Facilities Management on the project. The park is located beside Memorial Hall.
